Chapter History

For 11 years African African - American women at Davidson College challenged the administration to bring an historically black sorority to the campus. Previously an all male institution, Davidson had not allowed the existence of sororities on its campus. The campus' greek system included 6 intercollegiate fraternity council organizations and 4 all women's eating houses*. Although minority women participated in the eating house self-selection process, many felt that the campus lacked the sense of sisterhood, scholarship, and service that a historically black sorority would bring. In 2006, several young women petitioned the College campus and the president to begin the process of inviting one of the national pan-hellenic council (NPHC) sororities to charter at Davidson College. President Emeritus Bobby Vagt approved the process and 3 NPHC sororities were invited to campus to present the goals, histories, and programs to the students. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chosen by the campus committee and invited to begin their chartering process at Davidson.

Under the guidance of the Alpha Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the Ivy Club was formed as an interest group by 13 Davidson College women interested in becoming members of the sorority. On Sunday, November 23, 2008 - Stacy Barker, Kiara Boone, Kendall Cannon, Lazetta Crawford, Angelina Darrisaw, Brenda Fuentes, Ebony Harley, Brit'nee Haskins, Megan Lisa, Ambrice Miller, Claudia Ramirez, Kimberly Yarde, and Meikaela Zwierynzski chartered the "Simply Phenomenal" Sigma Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. Sigma Psi is the first chapter of an NPHC sorority to be chartered at Davidson, maintaining the historic AKA legacy of being 'first and finest'.

*Eating houses are not national organizations, and are only recognized on the campus-level.
